It's A House!
For the next year after finishing the framing, we've been working on bringing the inside of the house into livable condition. Windows, drywall, floors, insulation and kitchen cabinets have all been big projects. As of July, 2014, a little over a year from beginning, the house is nearly completed with just the kitchen installation (the cabinets are all built), the tile in the new bathroom, the finish carpentry and the finish electrical outstanding. Right now we're finishing all the wood floors, which has been quite a project since big life events kept interrupting and part of doing the floors meant moving everything (including us) out of the house for a time. We probably could've circumvented this by doing different kinds of flooring like carpet in the family room and tile in the kitchen, etc., but the wood floors are beautiful and we can expect a good fifteen or twenty years out of them before they might need scuffing and another coat of finish.
It is bittersweet to be finishing the house now after Grandma Lila's death, but we were very pleased to be able to move her into her new room even if for only a short time and we recognize that it was always a gamble for us to finish in time. |

She also got a lot of enjoyment her last few months watching the finishing details being put in place. She liked the green color on the walls and was thrilled with the big windows in her bedroom, was excited about carpet samples for her bedroom and liked watching the wood floor being laid. Her favorite part of the addition was all the windows in the family room making it look like a big enclosed porch. During her last weeks, her request was continually to take her to sit by the windows. It's going to take us a long time to be able to think of the new bedroom as anything other than "Grandma's room" because it's been called that since we first began making drawings.
