Crawling and New TeethIt was another month full of big changes for Abigail - looking back at the pictures, it seems like she changed by the day. Once she became mobile, it only took her a few days to realize that she could go places, though primarily her goal became to never let me out of her sight. If I set her down to play by me while I'm cooking or doing things, she pretty much sits on my foot, climbs on my leg, or chases after me (complaining all the way) if I go out of the room for a moment. When Katherine was a baby, I called her my limpet (which sounded better than barnacle). Abby is Limpet #2.
She learned to crawl the second week of August - I'd been thinking she would try all day and then in the evening I set her on the floor and she went right over to one of her toys like she'd been crawling all week. It took her a few days to recognize this newfound skill and get a little stronger, but her first action upon crawling across the living room was to find a chair and pull herself up to stand. She crossed "crawling" off the checklist and went straight to walking. |

Right after she started crawling, I noticed she was finally getting bulges in her lower gums and she cut her bottom two teeth one right after the other the third week of August. I'd wondered if she would have any trouble with this, but aside from a few times when she became pretty inconsolable and I administered baby Tylenol, she hardly seemed to notice. There was certainly no issue with fevers or any such unpleasantness. I said I'd been waiting for her teeth to begin starting her on food a little more seriously than just tastes of this and that, so she's begun eating with us at dinnertime. I'm easing her into eating slowly, so she's mostly just getting things like applesauce and sweet potatoes and green beans and then only at dinnertime. I'd be happy not to really transition her to food until she's one, but she is deeply interested in eating. Graham crackers became an instant favorite, though I try to only give her those now and then. She also learned how to drink out of a straw in about five minutes when Daddy's root beer was the reward.
True to her busy form, she has become much, much more content now that she's able to move around. There are actually stretches of time when she will sit on the floor and play or crawl around and investigate rather than wanting me to hold her all the time. She also now asks to get down when I'm holding her, which is a totally new phenomenon. If I go too far, though, she comes after me saying, "Mom-mom-mom-mom!" She says "Mom-mom" while coming to me consistently enough that I think she's saying my name, though Grandma Lila is absolutely convinced she's saying "Lila".
Kim and Emma visited for most of August and Abigail spent a lot of time next door on the patio playing in the toy kitchen (nominally with Emma, though the two girls tend to play around each other rather than with each other and Emma is much more interested in "Abby-Gail" than vice versa) and swinging on the swings. We took the two girls for formal pictures with Mom and Dad Turner on Mom's birthday and are waiting to see the results. I took some during the photo process and those are nice enough that I'm sure the real ones came out great.
Our little peanut is going from a tiny baby to a little girl and it seems hard to believe she can change so fast. Everyone tells you that, of course, but I don't think you can ever prepare for how fast a person goes from a practically emotionless little red blobby baby to a quick, intelligent toddler and then right on into a complete adult. She was sitting in the driver's seat of the car while I put her carseat in the other day and Ben said, "Is Abby driving us today?" I looked at her and realized that she might look pretty small now, but that day is probably going to seem like tomorrow.
In the meantime...I still enjoy hearing her little voice as she comes crawling after me saying, "Mom-mom-mom!"
